Bolton & Wigan depots are the first to be franchised...winners announced in December....going live next year....what happens with the 38s & 50s which will be still run commercially because Hyde Rd & sharston are about 18 months behind in the francising....the 38s will be commercial the 36 & 37 francised
Could someone explain "franchising" to me, I get it that services in the Greater Manchester area will be locally controlled, but what about services that run into Manchester from Warrington, Preston, Halifax etc. How does that work?

My understanding (as a driver) is that if the service is run by a Manchester operator, ie the journey starts in Manchester it will fall under the same bracket. So for example the 237 to Glossop will be part of the Tameside franchise. The 100 to Warrington will probably fall under Salford.

From what iv been told at work...services such as the 464 rochdale to accrington 125 bolton to preston etc will be granted a licence to operate in greater manchester
So services operated by Stagecoach Lancashire, Arriva Merseyside and Warrington's Own Buses that operate into the Greater Manchester area would need to have a licence from TFGM/Manchester Mayor?

They would continue as they do now and wouldn’t be included in any franchising package.
But lets look at the 125. Tfgm should just take over the route as far as Chorley as would mean along this route locals would not have cheap fares or day savers if Stagecoach was not invited into the system or wanted to join the fare system. in London bus permits routes don't take travelcards or TFL passes.
Some planned changes for 29 January 2023. Diamond Bus had planned to reduce frequencies and/or withdraw some journeys on some of their routes but the majority will be retained by TfGM.
- 8 (Diamond): Re-routed to terminate at St Mary's Gate and run a one-way loop around Manchester city centre via John Dalton Street, Cross Street, St Mary's Gate and Deansgate.
- 17 (GNW): Some peak-time journeys extended from Rochdale to Norden via the R8 route (via Bamford), partly replacing service 162.
- 36 (Diamond): Saturday daytime service reduced from every 12 minutes to every 15 minutes.
- 37 (Diamond): Saturday daytime service reduced from every 12 minutes to every 15 minutes.
- 132 (Diamond): 0735 weekday journey from Tyldesley to Wigan withdrawn (0710 journey from Trafford Centre timed at 0736 from Tyldesley remains).
- 162 (Diamond): Withdrawn and partly replaced by services 17 and 163.
- 163 (Diamond): Sunday evening short journeys between Middleton and Manchester are withdrawn
- 347 (Stagecoach): Monday-Saturday daytime service reduced from every 10 minutes to every 12 minutes.
- 524 (Diamond): Some weekday early evening journeys withdrawn.
- 575 (Diamond): Some early morning and early evening journeys withdrawn.

The 184 between Oldham and Huddersfield will be staying with First Bus, as the service will transfer from Oldham depot to Huddersfield depot in April. Be interesting to see if it's mentioned in the GMCA Bus Committee meeting next month, as the 184 was listed as being part of the contract for the next round of bus franchising in March 2024.
Can expect some re-timing on early morning and late afternoon/early evening journeys, as journeys will start/end in Huddersfield rather than Oldham. Possibly will mean an earlier final departure back into GM from Huddersifeld (currently 1935 weekdays, 1835 Saturdays, 1833 Sundays) but a possible later departure from Oldham to Huddersfield (currently 1803 weekdays, 1703 Saturdays, 1705 Sundays).
Also remains to be seen if First WY take over the late evening journeys currently operated by Nexus Move or if they will stay unchanged.
