I think part of the route change is the station has been dropped
37440 is parked in Rock Ferry Depot today
By missing out the section between the Ellesmere Port Rail Stn and Bus Stn , it will save at least 10 minutes running time , 5 minutes in each direction.

X8 serves that so waste sending 36 down there

Yeah the 36 started operating down there before the X8 started but as you say it is pointless both buses trying to catch the same passengers for Cheshire Oaks from the station.
Though I do think the X8 should use the bus stop outside the Railway Station in both directions .
Caught a glimpse of a solo on the 36 today leaving Runcorn. Refreshing change to see stagecoach in the area
With Stagecoach seeing a service in Runcorn , Widnes and Warrington only seem natural to be conquered .
