I do realise they are different services specifically the Crank and Ormskirk differences but wasn't as sure on the routes in Rainford itself, maybe the 38A option would be better than? Whatever funding the 152 managed to get for the Ormskirk extension could just be transferred across?

Could the Crank section not even be lost? The 157 will remain between Rainford and Crank which does mean Crank Road loses its service but from what I remember it's mostly surrounded by fields isn't it. As for the Dentons Green area could this not be covered by the 137/138?
The 152 is also the only Bus that serves Fairfield Hospital, Arriva could introduce a Daytime 356 to replace that but then what would replace the Ormskirk Section
The 356 does receive a DM payment off merseytravel for serving crank on an evening and sundays.

The 356 could just take over the full times of the 152 even the ormskirk section and could use one of the solos on it which would still have bigger seating capacity than htl solos.

To include the Ormskirk Section it would mean the Service would have to run infrequent or have long layovers as theres only 3 trips that go to Ormskirk and i cant see Arriva wanting to do that, I really cant see the 152 getting Withdrawn
HTL are also monitoring the situation and are looking at their own services for potential commercialisation I have been reliably informed.

I dont blame them otherwise they could end up losing a load of work

I think that's what they need to do is to look at there tenders and see what's best to commercialise as it would give them a bit more security.

Fairfield Hospital is a small private hospital, many of whose users & visitors probably have their own luxury cars - and probably contribute little to use of buses. Passengers are more likely to be residents of the rather tiny Crank Village - and in other areas, they would probably have already lost all bus services.

If the 38 were to do that, it'd leave the Church Road section of Rainford and the areas alongside the Rainford By-Pass, including the industrial estate, unserved. To try and cover all of that with one route would be very difficult given the tight nature of a number of the estates and roads around Rainford. I know that the 356 covers Crank of an evening but I believe that may already have some part funding to do so? Either way, to leave either part of the village without a service during the day would disadvantage a lot of users. In addition, the 152 serves parts of St Helens between Dentons Green and the town centre that the 38 doesn't and couldn't easily with the size of vehicles allocated.

The 152 also serves Ormskirk and for the 38 to do that, whilst still retaining the service for Rainford Junction, would mean that passengers boarding in the Junction would have to take a trip out to Ormskirk before returning to St Helens.

Remember also that the 152 in its current form has already helped replace another service, the 319. I do believe there's potential for the 152 to become a DM contract however as it carries a healthy load at most times of the day.

Moreover, the daytime 38 & 37 interwork using 3 buses on a 90 minute cycle. They sometimes struggle to keep time, and any diversion of 38 would make the cycle impossible - an extra bus would be needed - on routes that are probably barely lucrative for much of the day.
