Abellio will still be operating the Scotrail franchise till 2022 , which was the break date in the franchise , the extension for a further three years was only there if certain performance targets were reached and Transport scotland look like they have activated the break clause with abellio by mutual consent.

It will be interesting to see how Scotrail is run after 2022 , which will be a lot easier in Scotland as most trains in the country are operated by one train operating company , the only other passenger service operators being Avanti West Coast , CrossCountry , Caledonian Sleeper , LNER and Transpennine Express.

The main line between Perth and Inverness is currently blocked after the last two coaches of a short formed HST on test derailed on a set of points at Dalwhinnie in the early hours of this morning. There looks to be a fair amount of track damage, so could be a few days before services resume.
