Unless the weather is inclement i'd rather walk bus station or Foregate Street to/from the rail station, the bus station is a nice walk using the canal as the short cut.

For the able bodied people its not a problem walking , its the people who have limited mobility this becomes an issue , the bus station is better than nothing but as said there is other options as well available .
