The morning journeys (for at least one board out of the three) started in Rainford as opposed to Ormskirk or St Helens. Ormskirk was just the evening run never carrying more than fresh air past Rainford.

Ah right - that may have been down to where the buses had to start (one may have started on Rainford on the 38 and the other two may have started in Eccleston on the 37). My prediction probably only backs-up the evening journeys, when they probably ran them like that to save a little bit of money on fuel and possibly pick-up passengers who were waiting for the 319 (evidently, the latter mustn't have worked).
