Route change history
My first post!

I love the old routes and how they morphed into present day and sadly fell out of favour with the needs of the public so wanted to start a thread based on the routes and the history

Service Route Change/Date
3 Dingle - Walton Withdrawn 84?
City Centre - Kirkby Reintroduced as new route to compete with Fairways F3- 88?
Kirkby - City - Woolton Merged with 5 and becomes cross city route - 1990
218 Fazakerley - city - Woolton Renumbered and rerouted - 92??

Also, does anyone remember a time it ran to Old Roan as opposed to Kirkby or am I imagining that??

Jamie

The 3 (Dingle -Walton) merged the 85 (Garston -Pier Head) and became the 85 well before deregulation.

I do remember a Kirkby route, possibly the 218, being extended via Waddicar to Bootle New Strand in the early days after deregulation. Also, for a short while the 56 merged with the 11. Passengers were often offered a packed lunch if they were doing the full route.

Don't remember 218 being extended, 218 only came in after de-reg anyway. One of the 17's was extended to Bootle Strand after De-reg from Fazakerley going through old roan and Park Lane.

Yes, it was probably the 17 but it didn't last long.

No it didn't last long at all, of course this was the time when all sorts of weird and wonderful routes were tried wasn't it.

RE: Route change history
I remember the 61A was extended to town from Bootle for a short while. Also the 217 is only a shadow of its former self as a 2 hour slog from Halewood to CBS/PSBS

RE: Route change history
Liverpool Transport vol 5 confirms the 3 was merged with the 85 in September 78, becoming 85 Garston-Walton, 85 finished at D-reg but was partly replaced by the 21.

It was the 19 that merged with the 72 becoming Tower Hill-Hunts Cross, 4 & 5 stayed Woolton-City Centre, think the 4 & 5 was withdrawn around this time not merged with any route i've got a leaflet detailing the changes somewhere.

The Kirkby-Bootle route via Waddicar was the 54 operated by North Western, because of the weight restriction on Aintree Lane over the Canal North Western could only use minibuses, North Western extended the route at both ends to become Page Moss-City Centre, then extended the route again from City Centre to Page Moss to become a circle route 54,54A taking over 2 hours for 1 circuit, even then North Western still used minibuses as it still went down weight restricted Aintree Lane.

Think 218 stayed Kirkby-City Centre.

61A was a circle route with 61 ar D-Reg some journeys were numbered 62 Aigburth-Leckwith Road Industrial Estate, eventually 61/61A was split at Bootle, i've got an October 1986 Liverpool area bus map[have a few maps from that era including 1988 & 1990 Liverpool area maps.

RE: Route change history
The canal bridge for the 54 had nothing with weight restriction, before de-reg the ribble 365 used to go that way and was nearly always a decker.

The 3 definitely was merged with the 5 and was cross city and the 4 was withdrawn but was replaced in part by the 78A

Talking of Merseybus cross city of 91 I remember the following:

3+5 (3) as above
11 + 56 (11) Netherton - Huyton
14 + 79 (79) Croxteth - Netherley
18 + 53A (18) Netherton (then Crosby) - Croxteth Park
19 + 72 (19) Tower Hill - Halewood
20/21 + 82 (20/21) Tower Hill/Northwood - Speke
25 Diverted and extended to Maghull if I remember!
55 Old Roan - Garston
58 + 81A (81A) Litherland - Speke
75 + 91 (91) Crosby - Huyton
80 + 321/322 (80/80A/80B) Ormskirk - Garston/Airport
86 + 93 (86) Thornton - Garston (links with 55)

RE: Route change history
Deckers may well have used Aintree Lane[actually the Canal bridge on Wango Lane which leads to Aintree Lane] but sometime in the 80s a weight restriction was imposed on the bridge that's still there today, only minibuses can be used on that road.
