Definitely. I use the service end-to-end quite regularly and it's notable that I'm not the only one.

TPE will also continue to be one of the best TOCs for students as, on top of the regular service linking large University cities in the North, they also offer students up to 50% off their services meaning a return from Liverpool to Newcastle can be as cheap as £20. Even less if you're prepared to travel at unsociable hours.

TPE and to a bigger extent on the Nottingham - Liverpool corridor of East Midlands Trains have been a victim of there own success in getting the students on to the train , with some services packed to the gunwhales .

It also looks like TPE want to extend Manchester Airport-York services to Newcastle this year using 185s: http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browse%20documents/track%20access/1%20current%20consultations/2016.04.15%20-%20ftpe%20-%201st%20sa%20-%20section%2022a%20-%20closes%2012th%20may%202016/1st%20supplemental%20agreement_pcd%202016%20contingent%20rights.pdf
I'm not sure where the stock will come from unless they stop loaning 185s to Northern.

Just to bring this post up again, Is there a date for the Liverpool - Glasgow Service to start?

RE: TransPennine Express - wirralbus - 19/10/2016 00:10

There is planned to be three services Liverpool - Glasgow central High Level.

RE: TransPennine Express - T42 PVM - 19/10/2016 00:39

I know that as its in the post i brought up, but since the links no longer work am not sure when its due to start

RE: TransPennine Express - childwallblues - 19/10/2016 06:07

2018 I assume. TPE currently has no new stock t operate it.

RE: TransPennine Express - mikestone - 19/10/2016 12:33

Four existing York trains run through to/from Newcastle from December, three utilising one of the sets currently laying over at York during the day and turning over with Liverpool trains. The fourth is a set currently starting and finishing its day at York.
;
The Liverpool-Glasgow service starts in December 2018 with delivery of their new sets. One southbound will be a portion off a Manchester train.

The plan was for a limited Manchester Airport to Newcastle to start in December this year, ahead of a full hourly service at the end of next year. However, the plan was also for two refurbished loco-hauled sets to be secured on short term leases until the new stock arrives and I haven't heard about two sets moving to TPE yet.

RE: TransPennine Express - mikestone - 19/10/2016 18:33

The franchise requirement is for the two mark 3 sets to be refurbished before use, but the dates appear to be inconsistent.
Work appeared to have started on the two DVTs although it is being suggested they will run without, although the franchise doesn't seem to require TP to obtain a derogation to over-ride the Rule Book requirement for a brake vehicle. (WSMR's was specific to them)
