Southport 25 thought this was cancelled
The 187/188 was the Evening/Sunday contracts on what was the 87/88 (I think now 488). Even I'm unsure of the 42/42E though - although I do recall Merseybus doing a daytime 40 which would be within that area.

37/38 - a short lived St Helens - Prescot circular most of which forms the basis of the current 137/138.
Altrincham to Warrington went a long time ago as well.
I recall last year Network Warrington cancelled a load of service including the Cheshire Show shuttles, something they've not operated for a number of years. GHA have run them in recent years.

I can't believe half of these have been cancelled already.
The N services in St Helens were a short lived night network on Friday/Saturday Nights.
The X52 was a short lived North Western service.
The 197 goes back to the days of North Western Wigan Bus.

As you said it sounds like a house cleaning exercise , what are the implications of the registrations being still live , even though the services in some cases have well and trully bitten the dust.

So it looks Arriva are doing a bit of housekeeping across the board. I just can't understand why these services weren't cancelled when they were withdrawn originally.

Some of them look to have been specials for events. If the registration originally said between two dates only could the registration have remained active without a requirement to actually operate the service?

If they have registered a service and don't run it they can be stripped of the route or the TC could order them to do something that benefits passengers which could include running the service for free.
