Abellio East Anglia (new franchise starting in autumn 2016) - knutstransport - 10/08/2016 10:07

DfT have announced Abellio East Anglia have been awarded the new franchise and they will replace EVERY train (and loco-hauled set) in the fleet with brand new trains from Bombardier and Stadler even the 360s and 379s!

Amongst the trains to be replaced are 8 x 3 car and 4 x 2 car Class 170 and 9 x Class 156. It will be interesting to see where their future lies.

Northern do have to secure 18 x 2 car 170s or equivalent in addition to the cascades from GWR and Scotrail so released 170s increases the chance of those being 170s rather than equivalents to 170s.

I imagine the 156s will end up at EMT, along with the 5 x 156s which Scotrail are releasing which haven't been secured by Northern - that may allow them to release their 153s.

If there is any spare, maybe some could replace 142's/143's in South Wales and South West.

The GWR 143s, 150/0s, 150/1s and 153s are being replaced as a result of 387s being introduced and 165s and 166s being cascaded west, so the only 1980s DMUs GWR will have by the end of 2019 are 150/2s and 158s. Northern are getting the 150/1s and the 2 x 150/0s, LM are getting some of the 153s while the 143s will probably be scrapped.

When will GWRs 143s be replaced?

By July 2017. 153s should start leaving GWR in May 2017. 150s should start to transfer from GWR to Northern in September 2017.

They don't expect to be able to introduce enough 387s initially so some short HSTs are to be used as an interim measure to free up some Sprinters.

Sounds like I need to get my stakes on then

It is staggering that they are willing to replace the 360s yet alone the 379s! I guess both are non-standard types for Abellio, and at least the 360s were ordered by earlier franchisee First. I have heard the 360s touted to join Heathrow Connect units even if elsewhere on the network.

Wonders where the Class 379 units will go . Someone somewhere must have a plan for these units if Abellio East Anglia don't want them.
