Going on GMB, was irony that GMB got split whilst West Midlands Travel who were just as big & dominant in there area stayed as one company, although there's more competition National Express West Midlands[as they're now known as] are still the main company.

The birth of the 1986 North Western was quite an anomaly. The name was apparent a good few weeks before d-reg when all vehicles were acquired by this new company. The routes stayed as was. A few Olympians gained the new livery but most of them had stickers over the Ribble logo with the NW one. The windscreens had a note advising that they were 'on loan to Ribble' until the services were handed over. Then all hell broke loose. What an interesting time that was! There was an ad in the Liverpool Echo for North Westerm before d-reg which is something that the government must have wanted back then. Imagine that now!!

Would a regulated system be any better than what we have now, with most County Councils are withdrawing tendered routes in order to save money, apparently Derbyshire County Council are making cuts to tendered services, & tendered services Peak District are being cut left right & centre with some areas being left without a bus on Sundays, & we've seen the cash flow problems Northamptonshire County Council have that they have no money left. TFL have been cutting bus frequencies as well. With this Government's austerity measures at the moment funding for bus services would be heavily cut at the moment.

The deregulated system at the moment may not be perfect as be always careful what you wish for.

I agree but who know's. Car ownership is much higher than it was 30+ years ago but with no profit making services there were many more routes and subsidies than today. Bit like British Rail!!!
