I'm wondering why this was done. Is it because of falling under different tendering bodies who find it difficult to co-ordinate with each other, or maybe because the 5 was struggling to keep to time going all the way and back?

That section of route has been registered as the F5 service.

The F5 only runs from Mold to Asda Queensferry not Deeside. It’s pathetic that Arriva Cymru are running empty to operate the 101 and the route has been cut in half.
