Yorkshire's would be in either Sapphire or MAX base liveries

These where just standard livery like the ones that have entered service in merseyside recently.

Not all roads lead to Manchester. If they were heading south and had passed the Wigan turn-off (J26) my guess is that they were heading for the St Helens turn-off (J23). It's only a short run to St Helens depot where I assume that will have their PDI and stored until final delivery to Bootle.
