SWT have taken over the 8 x 8 car Class 460 Gatwick Express Juniper units. They have all been moved to WABTEC at Loughborough and Doncaster to be converted into 5 car Class 458/5 units. Six new units will be created (458531-36) and a further 30 carriages will be inserted into 8001-30 making them five car units 458501-30. The remaining 4 x 460 carriages, all driving cars will be scrapped.
The 458/5 will take over the duties of the High Capacity 450/5 on the Windsor & Eton and Hounslow loop services. The 450/5 (450543-70) will be converted back to 450/0 . Waterloo to Reading services currently operated by 458s will become 450 operated.
The first two 458/5 should be 458533 and 458534.
I shall look out for the ex-class 460 vehicles and ride one next time I go to the Hounslow area. This might not be imminent as I last went there last September.
The first of the rebuilt Class 458/5 units has arrived at Wimbledon Depot for testing. 458534 is rebuilt from ex Gatwick Express vehicles from units 460004 and 460008.
458531 has now left WABTEC for Wimbledon
458003 has gone to WABTEC Doncaster for conversion to 458/5.
458010 has gone to WABTEC Doncaster for conversion to 458/5.
458502 was noted in service on 8 November with 458531 on a Waterloo to Weybridge service.
I wonder how many 458/5 conversions are now in service, or the target date for them all to be completed?
The first Class 707 has been delivered.
707001 was moved from Dollands Moor to Clapham Yard yesterday.
707001 has already been tagged by vandals. However it is suspected that this was done on its journey between Krefeld and Calais.
The second Class 707 is due to be moved from Dollands Moor to Clapham Junction tonight by 56081/104.
