(01/03/2016 14:32)Barney Wrote: [ -> ]Nonsense. What you need to understand is that a regulated bus service would cost a lot more to operate than the current deregulated one. Just look at how much it costs to run buses for TfL. If you are old enough to remember, the whole rationale of the 1985 Transport Act (introduced by a Conservative government) was to REDUCE the amount of subsidy from central government to local councils by privatising the bus companies.
SHOULD franchising ever be introduced outside of London, the privatised companies such as Stagecoach and Arriva would only apply to operate routes that were profitable. In essence, the loss of all tendered (non-profitable) services is exactly what the ultimate objective of what was planned some 30 years ago.
Finally, if you don't buy a ticket (vote) don't expect to win the raffle (have your views represented).
The problem is everyone has different opinions. I'm assuming your pro labour and that is your choice it's mine not to particularly like any of them. They all live in a different world down there with there subsidised bars and restaurants, they haven't got a clue how us northerners live.
I quite like the views and beliefs of Oldham council leader Jim Mchanon who's labour but he's a very small fish in a very big pond.
As for franchising no body knows how it will work so how can you call it nonsense? It was my understanding that groups of bigger and smaller (subsidised) services would be bundled together and the winning bidder would operate them all on a commercial style basis with no subsidies paid. It would also so away with the current situation where an operator is happy to run a commercial frequent service on a semi major corridor mon-sat daytime but operates it with a subsidie in the evenings and on Sundays/BH so effectively you bid for a major service you run it 7 days a week, but as said no one knows the exact details of how it would work so don't call someone's comments nonsense because they don't tally with your thoughts etc.

I don't think franchising is nonsense. As much as I would like to see it happen, I just can't see the government doing anything to help the current bus service provision outside of London. The government promised a Buses Bill when it was elected but so far nothing has happened probably because the big four don't want to have their profit margins squeezed.
BTW the last Transport Minister who was in anyways effective was Norman Baker and he was a Lib Dem.
(01/03/2016 21:17)Dentonian Wrote: [ -> ]Supposedly, the Buses Bill has been delayed due to London Mayoral Elections and the forthcoming EU referendum, but as both were fully expected that does seem to be a poor excuse on behalf of Whitehall.
Going back to your other general point about Policies. As I think Mayneway has said, there is a distinct difference between Manifesto promises and what is actually enacted. Plus, let's not forget that the context is Buses, not what the media and politicians see as "public transport" ie. Rail. So maybe you can tell me what Labour's actual Policy is for Buses, as they never mention it on their Party Political broadcasts or in media interviews on relevant subjects?
More pertinently, and to paraphrase the People's Judean Front (or was it the Popular Front of Judea), what have Labour actually done for us Bus Users/Non Motorists?
For those of you who aren't interested in politics, David Cameron (Conservative) has been Prime Minister since May 2010. Below, if it works, is a link outlining the current Labour Party's policy on public transport, including bus services.
BTW, I am not, and never have been, a member of any political party but I do exercise my right to vote as I feel it is the least I can do for those many millions of people who fought and died for that same right.

To be clear are these a confirmed updated version of April cuts/changes?
Which part of Arriva's 375 has subsidy?
I didn't know it either until it was posted on the previous page, the route through Bescar must have subsidy.

The diversion via Bescar is subsided.

This is the updated list. From Lancashire County Council:
Quote:Changes to bus services from 3 April 2016
As part of £65m savings the county council has identified in its budget for this year, we have had to make changes to how we fund bus routes. This is one of many difficult decisions we have had to make, and we still have to find more than £200m additional savings over the next five years.
This will mean changes to some bus services from 3 April. However, 60% out of the 113 bus services in Lancashire that we currently subsidise will still run in some form or other - though there may be changes to the routes and times of these services. We have reallocated £2m and have worked with bus operators to enable this to happen. Our priority is to support services that help you get to work and education.
Those bus services we will no longer be supporting will either be run by the bus operators on a commercial basis or will stop running after 2 April.
Services that will change
We're sorry we don't know the full details of the new services yet as we are having to make changes very quickly, but please bear with us and as soon as we do we'll let you know. We're working hard to get all the bus services changes onto this website as quickly as possible, and it may be nearer to the start of the changed services that the new timetables will appear.
In the meantime, here is a list of the bus services that will be affected and the details that we have so far. We will be updating timetables as soon as we can.
